S’Arenal Lighting
Public bidding - Lighting and street furniture
S’Arenal (Palma Beach)
Open competition, 2017
Public design competition for the comprehensive renewal of urban lighting and street furniture along the seafront of s’Arenal, in Playa de Palma. The area of action extends over 5.4 km, from the Club Náutico de Can Pastilla to the Club Náutico de s’Arenal, covering an area of high tourist and residential intensity. The project starts from an attentive reading of the site, understanding the promenade as a civic, landscape and energy infrastructure, beyond its merely functional condition.
In contrast to the existing system – based on large concrete pillars and obsolete, inefficient and visually heavy lighting fixtures – an intervention is proposed that redefines the identity of the waterfront from the urban scale to the construction detail.
The new luminaires are conceived as urban pieces with their own identity, inspired by the structural elements of traditional Balearic lateen sailing boats, reinterpreted from a contemporary, precise and contained language. The proposal combines durable and recyclable materials, efficient construction solutions and a recognizable urban presence without stridency.
The lighting system is designed based on criteria of self-sufficiency, energy efficiency and phased construction, reducing losses, maintenance and consumption. The strategy is articulated through a system of modulation, using the spas as social and energy nodes capable of capturing solar energy and redistributing it in a zoned manner, integrating technology, landscape and local identity into a coherent and lasting solution.
